How Does Spinal Fusion Work?

The goal of spinal fusion is to reduce pain in the low back or neck caused by painful motion of the spinal vertebrae or the vertebral discs between them. The offending level (or levels) of the spine are approached from either the front, back, or side based on surgeon preference. The disc is removed, and in the case of fusions that incorporate an interbody fusion device, the implant is filled with bone graft material and inserted between the vertebral bodies where the disc formerly resided, thus encouraging the two vertebrae to grow (fuse) together.
